World Day

*

As a cumulative commemoration of student learning in social studies this year, Harris Middle School participated in a World Day celebration.  This gave students a chance to display their knowledge of the regions of the world studied in their individual curriculums.

The sixth grade studied countries of Europe, central, and South America.  They produced tri-boards that displayed a timeline of important events, the national flag, major landmarks, and statistical information for a particular country from those regions.

The seventh grade studied individual countries of Africa, Asia, and Australia.  They created an interactive timeline using www.dipity.com.  They also created word clouds using tagxedo.com. Topics included endangered animals, political events, pop-culture icons, and the history of the country’s flag.  Mrs. Holtzclaw, with the Mitchell High School drama department, loaned costumes from Egypt, China, and Greece.

Eighth grade social studies is the study of North Carolina History.  These students decided to take a different view point of World Day.  They wanted to show what North Carolina had contributed to the world from science and technology, medicine, politics, pop culture, natural landmarks, and sports.

Students not only learned from this process, but were able to enjoy the day as well.  They ate a meal from their native region of study.  The sixth grade had a traditional chicken and rice dish from El Ranchero.  The seventh grade had sesame chicken and rice from Little Tokyo.  The eighth grade had eastern North Carolina bar-b-que from Bama-Q.
